Colombian Leader Warns 'I Will Take Up Arms Again' if US Invades.

Donald Trump and his Colombian counterpart have escalated the volume of their exchange, increasing strains between the two countries after American military units targeted Venezuela to remove the leader of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro from office.

"He has cocaine mills and cocaine factories and his time is running out," Trump added.

Rising Tensions and Allegations

Talking to reporters on Sunday, the US president threatened similar military action towards the South American nation, claiming the nation is also "very ill" and led by a problematic figure involved in producing cocaine and distributing it to America."

Although Colombia stands as the world’s largest producer of cocaine, authorities have found no indication implicating Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly involved in the illicit industry.

A Frayed Alliance

The country was historically a staunch collaborator of the United States in the struggle against drug trafficking and received bipartisan support from American politicians, yet ties have deteriorated dramatically since Trump was elected.

The nation's drug trade is predominantly run by guerrilla factions like the Golf Clan, another leftist insurgency and breakaway groups of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), most of its former fighters demobilised subsequent to a 2016 peace deal.

The President's Defiant Rebuttal

In response to a query whether armed intervention like that in Venezuela was a possibility against his country, Trump replied: "That seems like a good idea to me personally."

President Petro, an ex-guerrilla fighter who left armed struggle in the last century, rejected the accusations. "I am not an illegitimate leader nor am I a drug trafficker," he affirmed.

"He comments uninformed. Stop slandering me," he posted in a message.

"If they [the US] bomb rural communities, they will become thousands of guerrillas in the mountains. And should they arrest the nation's leader, which many of Colombians admires and supports, they will provoke the fierce spirit of the people," Petro warned.

From Fighter to Statesman

Petro spent some years as a young man belonging with the radical M-19 armed organization but is not believed to have ever engaged in fighting. Upon leaving the group, he participated in drafting a new constitution in the early 90s subsequently becoming an influential politician. He held the office of mayor of the Colombian capital before winning president.

"I swore to abstain from using a weapon again ... but in defense of my country I shall resume arms again," he affirmed.

Reinforced Protection along with Widespread Condemnation

Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that the president’s security detail had received additional support.

Many among Colombia’s political right have allied themselves with Trump, but voices spanning the political spectrum have condemned the notion of an invasion against their nation.

Political and Financial Strains

American authorities withdrew his travel authorization subsequent to he called on US military personnel to ignore orders that violate law. Later, in October, the US enacted asset freezes on Petro, the first lady and several close collaborators.

Simultaneously as the US increased its forces in the Caribbean and targeting vessels thought to carry drugs to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, the US executed attacks on boats off the Pacific coast adjacent to Colombia.
